The town was mostly a farming community however fishing such as whaling was a large part of the early economy. Much of the trees in the early years were cut as firewood for the try-works on Whaling ships with would separate the whaling oil. The town of Barnstable originally encompassed the area now known as Falmouth which incorporated in 1686 as Saconesset then changed its name to Falmouth in 1693.
